Chapter 5 · The end of House Ziandmond

Winter, year 179. Sauchia died of hunger in Stianess, in the middle of life, after 39 years at the head of the Methllerk. She was ambitious, forgiving and proud. The seat stood empty.

Hunger stayed in Stianess for 33 years. The worst of it left grain for barely 10 in a hundred. Salziark decided to ration the grain in Stianess, because she was afraid. Hunger drove 52 people out of Stianess, and they went to Llaness. It was hardly the only place: Zailira, Mueness and Llaness knew the same hunger in those years. The granaries were slow to fill, but fill they did.

By custom, the ruler was chosen by their own people. Four stood for the seat: Salziark, Charkgalta, Brantail and Mendbrark. Salziark was chosen with 18 supporters to Charkgalta's 3. What weighed most was the prestige of their house and a gift for command. The seat changed hands once more in these years.

Hunger took 38 of those who led settlements in these years: Brelcherk (Stianess), Charkgalta (Zailira), Llastath (Stianess), Lestal (Mueness), Stuidaind (Mueness), Zorkguerk (Mueness), Raunbra (Mueness), Zuibran (Mueness), Guiton (Mueness), Maislerk (Zailira), Stuerktend (Stianess), Zondtath (Mueness), Skesskal (Stianess), Zuethron (Zailira), Mathzal (Stianess), Lluisllue (Mueness), Ruisstes (Mueness), Zasdark (Stianess), Zeltaro (Mueness), Railcha (Stianess), Tanskuith (Mueness), Zastadai (Mueness), Thauro (Mueness), Lasllon (Mueness), Dianchond (Stianess), Ramaindlai (Stianess), Melduith (Stianess), Sarkskand (Mueness), Luisteth (Mueness), Chastuil (Zailira), Gandstas (Stianess), Taunddas (Mueness), Lasraunden (Stianess), Muethsuith (Zailira), Dalchel (Stianess), Raullelros (Stianess), Mobraund (Zailira) and Mathton (Stianess).

The gods spoke once in these years. “May Lluisllue dream of better days,” asked lanternfish. Lluisllue saw it in a dream, and woke in a different mood.

When those years had passed, fear hung over the people, and discontent was growing. Mendbrark still held the seat.
