Chapter 4 · The end of House Suirkrond

It was the autumn of year 128. Mosskos died of old age in Llaness, already an old man, after 1 year at the head of the Methllerk. He was ambitious, cautious and loyal. The seat stood empty.

Hunger stayed in Llaness for 10 years. The worst of it left grain for barely 12 in a hundred. Nor was it alone: Stianess, Mueness and Zailira knew the same hunger in those years. In the end a harvest fed everyone again.

By custom, the ruler was chosen by their own people. Four stood for the seat: Tuindtuend, Dosduend, Lloththue and Guilskaith. No one gained a clear advantage over the others, and the seat stood empty while the Methllerk made up their minds. After 4 seasons of waiting, Tuindtuend was chosen with 13 supporters to Dosduend's 12. What weighed most was a gift for command and their ties with those who chose. The seat changed hands once more in these years.

With its last member House Suirkrond, whose motto was “No one eats alone”, went out: no one was left to bear its name. House Ziabruil, House Saisdauth and House Lluigath went out as well in these years, and 11 more besides.

Hunger took five of those who led Llaness in these years: Llanthueto, Melchau, Mathmuirk, Dastand and Zagauslau.

Dosduend, who headed Llaness, died of old age, already an old woman. She was cautious, generous and humble. She left a widower, Llanthueto, and a child.

The gods spoke twice in these years. “May it rain on the other side of the mist,” asked Vey. It did not happen: no one knows what lies beyond the mist, not even the gods, and what cannot be seen cannot be touched. “A good harvest for those who went to Zailira,” asked tidewright. The next harvest of Zailira would come blessed.

None of it was forgotten. Sauchia still held the seat. The mood was calm.
