The Chronicle of the Methllerk

It all began with Maraval, who asked the island for a new people: the Hesari, who would think and live together. The laws granted it, but charged their price: what was asked was worth more than a god can give for free, and in exchange the Hesari would eat more than anyone their size, would breed slowly, would not withstand a drought, would be fragile and would hunt badly.
“May the harvest of Llaness be so great that it will not fit in its granaries,” asked tidewright. The next harvest of Llaness would come blessed. The laws changed it: no god can make the land give more than half again what it gives; it was a good harvest, not one to burst the granaries.
“Let drought fall on the whole island for ten years,” asked Oskel_77. A dry season fell on the fields of Llaness. The laws changed it: the laws grant a god no more than one season and one region; the drought fell only on Llaness, and only for a season.
“May Londruin make the people keep their grain,” asked lanternfish. In a dream, Londruin saw a way: to ration the grain. No one obliged them to take it. The laws changed it: no god commands what a people decides; the vision ordered nothing, it only pointed out a road.
“May the grain of Stianess rot,” asked saltmarsh_june. It did not happen: a blessing that takes away is no blessing, and the laws did not let it through.
“May it rain on the other side of the mist,” asked Vey. It did not happen: no one knows what lies beyond the mist, not even the gods, and what cannot be seen cannot be touched.
“A good harvest for those who went to Zailira,” asked tidewright. The next harvest of Zailira would come blessed.
“May Lluisllue dream of better days,” asked lanternfish. Lluisllue saw it in a dream, and woke in a different mood.
“Rain for Llaness again, please,” asked Brume. It did not happen: there was no drought to break, and rain without a drought is nothing the laws will grant.
“May the sky tell Sandresgo that their time is running out,” asked Maraval. The Methllerk saw the sign in the sky, and read it as an ill omen over Sandresgo.
“Bread for Mueness,” asked saltmarsh_june. The next harvest of Mueness would come blessed.
