Chapter 3 · The end of House Dozos

Autumn, year 86. Golstan, who headed Mueness, died of hunger, still young. She was patient, pious and proud.

Hunger stayed in Mueness for 6 years. At its worst there was no grain for 9 in every hundred mouths. Golstan decided to ration the grain in Mueness, because she was afraid. Hunger drove 6 people out of Mueness, and they went to Zailira. It was not only there: Stianess, Zailira and Llaness went through the same in those years. A good season cut the hunger short at last.

Manra died of old age in Llaness, already an old woman, after 29 years at the head of the Methllerk. She was ambitious, bold and proud. She left a widower, Sesesga. The seat stood empty. By custom, the ruler was chosen by their own people. Four stood for the seat: Densond, Stuerktues, Gasguis and Sothath. Densond was chosen with 24 supporters to Stuerktues' 3. What weighed most was a gift for command and the prestige of their house. The seat changed hands once more in these years.

With its last member House Dozos, whose motto was “No one eats alone”, went out: no one was left to bear its name. House Guerkdau, House Liathta and House Lengail went out as well in these years, and 17 more besides.

The gods spoke once in these years. “May the grain of Stianess rot,” asked saltmarsh_june. It did not happen: a blessing that takes away is no blessing, and the laws did not let it through.

Of all that, Mueness, by then the largest of their settlements, remained. Fear hung over the people, and discontent was growing.
