Chapter 2 · The end of House Londia

It was the winter of year 43. Lainchon died of hunger in Llaness, in the middle of life, after 3 years at the head of the Methllerk. She was bold, skeptical and vengeful. She left a widower, Garkthial. The seat stood empty.

Hunger stayed in Mueness for 17 years. In the worst season only 8 in every hundred mouths had grain. Stuisrairk decided to ration the grain in Mueness, because she was afraid. 6 people fled the hunger of Mueness and made for Zailira. It was hardly the only place: Llaness, Stianess and Zailira suffered the same in those years. The land finally gave back what it owed.

Mondrais died of hunger in Stianess, in the middle of life, after 4 years at the head of the Methllerk. He was easily content, forgiving and skeptical. The seat stood empty. By custom, the ruler was chosen by their own people. Four stood for the seat: Manra, Llaszath, Stiaston and Gostuend. No one gained a clear advantage over the others, and the seat stood empty while the Methllerk made up their minds. After 2 seasons of waiting, Manra was chosen with 11 supporters to Llaszath's 4. What weighed most was a gift for command and their ties with those who chose. The seat changed hands 8 more times in these years.

With its last member House Londia, whose motto was “What is one's is all's”, went out: no one was left to bear its name. House Maiskend, House Miassuin and House Giasrial went out as well in these years, and 43 more besides.

The gods spoke once in these years. “May Londruin make the people keep their grain,” asked lanternfish. In a dream, Londruin saw a way: to ration the grain. No one obliged them to take it. The laws changed it: no god commands what a people decides; the vision ordered nothing, it only pointed out a road.

Manra still held the seat. Fear hung over the people, and discontent was growing as these years closed.
