Chapter 7 · The end of House Gogai

Summer, year 257. Rasda, who headed Llaness, died of hunger, in the middle of life. He was bold, forgiving and greedy. He left a widow, Braischues, and a child.

Hunger stayed in Llaness for 17 years. At its worst there was no grain for 11 in every hundred mouths. It was hardly the only place: Zailira, Mueness and Stianess and the other settlements went through the same in those years. A good season cut the hunger short at last.

Sandresgo, over whom Maraval had cast an ill omen, died of old age in Mueness, already an old woman, after 4 years at the head of the Methllerk. She was forgiving, generous and patient. The seat stood empty. By custom, the ruler was chosen by their own people. Four stood for the seat: Muisark, Dada, Skuelgaun and Mosthau. No one gained a clear advantage over the others, and the seat stood empty while the Methllerk made up their minds. After 3 seasons of waiting, Dada was chosen with 24 supporters to Skuelgaun's 4. What weighed most was the prestige of their house and a gift for command. The seat changed hands 5 more times in these years.

With its last member House Gogai, whose motto was “Name before bread”, went out: no one was left to bear its name. House Mesdairk, House Brondluith and House Skatiark went out as well in these years, and 16 more besides.

The gods spoke twice in these years. “May the sky tell Sandresgo that their time is running out,” asked Maraval. The Methllerk saw the sign in the sky, and read it as an ill omen over Sandresgo. “Bread for Mueness,” asked saltmarsh_june. The next harvest of Mueness would come blessed.

And with that, year 294 was over. Skuelgaun still held the seat. The mood was calm. In Llaness the hunger had not gone.
